What will I be doing and learning as a High Rocks intern?
You will be working alongside High Rocks senior staff to create educational and transformative summer experiences for WV youth. You will be team-teaching in a class in your internship subject area at High Rocks summer camps. You will be studying under highly skilled educators, service providers and activists to explore educational techniques and youth development in a context of rural development and social change. You will be a role model for teen girls. You will be spending your summer outdoors. This creative and unique experience will help you grow as a leader, a thinker, and a doer. Who can apply to be a High Rocks intern?
Our internship is designed for college students, graduate students, and High Rocks alumnae. We encourage students interested in math, science, arts, humanities, and education to apply. Women's studies, social service, outdoor education, leadership, and other majors have also benefited from our internship program. We are looking for young people who are: Self-starters who strive for excellence; Innovators who are excited about helping teenage girls see learning in a new, exciting way and are motivated to make a difference.
Who will I be studying under?
Co-Executive Directors of High Rocks: Sarah Riley and Maribeth Saleem-Tanner. Seminar Leaders: Ann Garcelon, public/media relations consultant in Charleston and legislative analyst for WV State Senator McCabe. Christine Campbell, M.A. (Reading Specialist) has taught for several years in the public school system, is the 2005 Pocahontas County Teacher of the Year and has pioneered innovative teaching techniques at High Rocks. Elizabeth Engelhardt, PhD is an accomplished professor at the University of Texas at Austin, specializing in Appalachian Women's Studies. Rachel Tompkins Ed. D, President of the Rural School and Community Trust, is a longtime activist on rural development and education. Primary teachers: The teachers you will be partnering with during camps come from a variety of backgrounds and bring extensive experience and training.
Is the internship for academic credit?
Although we cannot ensure credit this year, we will work actively with your university to explore field-study and independent-study options so that you may gain credit for your High Rocks internship.
